In support of their debut album release, the Dallas based, multi-instrumentalist duo The Gibbonses, are embarking on a month long tour up the East Coast and across the mid-west. This is the band’s only public appearance in CT, so this is one show you’re not going to want to miss!

With a unique blend of Southern Soul, Americana, and Rhythm & Blues, Torrington native Brandon Gibbons (Charity) and his wife Jackie have been capturing the attention of music lovers across the Southwest. The band has shared the stage with The Black Lillies, Kimberly Dunn, Dalton Domino, Sam Riggs, and Prophets and Outlaws to name a few. In a recent album spotlight, Texas Music Picker’s had this to say about their record, Among The Rubble; “This captivating record offers a tale of tragedy and finding resolve, leaving the listener engaged throughout the journey in between! Every song has something to say and we’re impressed by the maturity in this talented band’s debut record!”

Local legends of folk and bluegrass, Switch Factory, will start the show off. These guys are incredible! John Fitts, a writer for the Litchfield County Times, writes, “With a fun live show, impeccable chops and tight harmonies, the members of Switch Factory are in a great place musically.”

Along with this fantastic musical line up you will enjoy the beauty that is South Farms in Morris, CT. And AmandaBakes will be there with some tasty dessert treats!

Get Your KP Fix at LOST IN YONKERS

While The Desultory Theatre Club finishes programming the beginning of their next season, our very own, Keith Paul, has been spending his days and nights working on his next project…  LOST IN YONKERS at the Warner Theatre’s Nancy Marine Studio Theatre.

12719665_674400812663098_784982884985737300_o

By America’s great comic playwright, Neil Simon, this memory play brings us back to Yonkers in 1942. The hit Broadway production featured Irene Worth, Mercedes Ruehl and Kevin Spacey in award-winning performances.

As the play opens, ne’er-do-well Eddie Kurnitz–recently widowed and financially strapped–deposits his two adolescent sons on his mother’s doorstep to take to the road as a traveling salesman. The boys are left to contend with the stern and terrifying Grandma Kurnitz, their sweet but mentally-challenged Aunt Bella, and Louie, a small-time hoodlum running from gangsters…who also happens to be their uncle. What a strange new world Yonkers is.

Catch LOST IN YONKERS at The Warner Theatre’s Nancy Marine Studio Theatre from March 5, 2016, through March 13, 2016.

For details, check out the Facebook Event Page and/or the Warner Theatre’s website.

Pocket Vinyl to Play at Hardcore Sweet Cupcakes in December

The Desultory Theatre Club is pleased to announce (on a much cooler evening!) the return of one of our favorite acts in CT…

Pocket Vinyl!!

They are so ready to return to our fun venue at Hardcore Sweet Cupcakes! This time with special opening artist: Rachel Elizabeth Pass!

Pocket Vinyl consists of a one-man band and on-stage artist, performing for your pleasure. Check them out at The Desultory Theatre Club's show at Hardcore Sweet Cupcakes in Oakville on December 4, 2015!

What is Pocket Vinyl you may ask?

They are made up of the lovely Eric Stevenson on piano, vocals, and harmonica, and the talented Elizabeth Jancewicz–on-stage artist and inspiration for lots of things.

Eric rocks out and plays the piano while Elizabeth starts with a blank canvas and paints her way through the night. At the end of the show, the paintings are then sold to the highest bidder.

They’re married. They’re from New London, CT. Their 4th album, Tin, was just released this Fall! They invented the world’s first “MP” EP (short for “mini play”). They’re full time musicians working on a DIY level.

They sleep in their car sometimes and love it. Eric likes board games. Elizabeth loves animals. They are super nice and extremely talented. And they’re trying very hard to be your favorite band. Check them out!

And joining them is another unique CT artist, Rachel Elizabeth Pass!

Rachel is a student at Canton Middle School, where her musical talents have blossomed. She is a lover of Musical theatre, a member of the Canton Middle School Chamber Singers and has participated in the elite Northern Regional choral performances.  In her spare time, she writes her own songs, plays the alto sax, and has recently learned how to play the Ukulele. She is a creative joy!

As if that wasn’t enough, the event will be housed at the super cool Hardcore Sweet Cupcakes–winner of Cupcakes Wars on the Food Network! Putting out some pretty fantastic treats to blow your minds and please your tummies! Cupcakes! Whoopie Pies! And you may even be lucky enough to grab an original Ponut, the amazing creation that is part pie and part donut!! Check out their website!

A Musical So Killer, You Just Have to See It: Assassins

What would you do in pursuit of the American dream?

Assassins at The Warner Theatre in Torrington, CT
Dead Presidents will be revived this weekend on the Nancy Marine Studio Theatre Stage as nine assassins and would-be assassins tell their tales of how they were cheated of the American dream. “Everybody’s got the right to be happy,” right? Forgetting that it is only the pursuit of happiness that is guaranteed in The Constitution–and not happiness itself–these damaged souls seek their solution with a gun.

The cast of The Warner Theatre's production of Assassins 2015

Photo by Mandi Martini – © The Warner Theatre 2015

It’s a hallucinatory trip, at times, like the carnival game that opens the show, offering contestants the opportunity to shoot a President. Or when the assassins beseech Lee Harvey Oswald to make history for the benefit of all of them. The timeline isn’t linear, but that’s not the point. It’s this portrayal of these outliers in a non-judgmental manner, exposing instead the American tradition of using violent force–most often, with guns–to right perceived wrongs in the pursuit of a dream that doesn’t exist at all. This may not seem like the typical fodder of the musical genre, and that’s what makes this show so exceptional.

Keith Paul as President Garfield in The Warner Theatre's production of Assassins

The Desultory Theatre’s Club’s own, Keith Paul, will don his actor’s cap for the role of President James Garfield and then some… in this highly anticipated revival. If you’ve never seen him perform before, you’re in for a treat! (And if you have, you’re still in for a treat…you just already know to expect a stellar portrayal!) He truly is a Renaissance man.

Catch Assassins at The Warner Theatre’s Nancy Marine Studio Theatre from September 26, 2015 through October 4, 2015.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office. This musical contains strong language and adult situations; it may not be suitable for all audiences.

HEAD Is Making Headway

Did you know that our fearless leader–Keith Paul–is a puppeteer?

It’s true! He’s partnered with those crazy kids over at Elmwood Productions for a few projects now, including his role in the highly-anticipated, all-puppet horror flick HEAD!

HEAD is a one-of-a-kind film starring an all puppet cast in a throwback to the slasher films of the 1970’s and 1980’s. A group of twenty somethings go for a nice fall weekend camping trip and end up in the middle of nightmare they may never escape from…

And now? HEAD is going on the road!!!

HEAD - HORROR THE ELMWOOD WAY is a puppet horror film harking back to the 70s era of horror. Screenings will be held on 3/28 and 3/29 in Plantsville, Connecticut

That’s right–HEAD will be a part of **3** film festivals, getting out in front of more eyes, and (hopefully!) winning some well-deserved accolades!

  • On September 18, 2015, HEAD is screening as part of the late nite screenings at the Lake Erie Arts and Film Festival in Sandusky, Ohio! – you can find the full festival schedule here: http://lakeeriefilm.org/2015festival.html
  • Come out for a special screening of HEAD in Belfast, Ireland on October 24, 2015–just in time for Halloween! Check out the website for The Yellow Fever Indie Film Fest at Movie House Cinemas for all the details! http://theyfiff.wix.com/theyfiff
  • Fall festival season continues!!! HEAD will be screening on HALLOWEEN at the FANtastic Horror Film Festival in San Diego, California, at Reading Cinemas Gaslamp on October 31, 2015! And it’s been nominated for “BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS” in a feature film!

AND HEAD was just added to the Puerto Rico Horror Film Fest in San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 20-26, 2015! This is a biggie–Puerto Rico Horror Film Festival has been named one of the Top 13 Horror Film Festivals to Die For by Movie Maker Magazine!

Looks like HEAD is taking over the world!! You’ll want to be there to see history in the making!!
